The Tour Aotearoa

I flew into Auckland on the 22nd and 3 hours later had to unpack my bike and try to get it into this tiny Chieftain plane so that I could fly to Kaitaia and ride the 70 miles north to the next camp site from Cape Reinga, the Tour Aotearoa start line.
Everything ran smoothly however the internal flight was very bumpy as we flew through lot’s of cloud. I actually found it very exciting having full confidence in the pilot. I was lucky there were only three passengers as I was concerned when booking the flight that my bike wouldn’t fit.
I rode 5 miles from the airport and stopped as the new brake discs rubbed and I was virtually stopping. A local saw me and my upturned bike and offered use of his garage as it was dark at this point.
I got the brakes sorted and was expecting to arrive at a campsite around midnight ready for a short ride in the morning to the start line.
Luckily one of the bicycle taxis arranged for the entrants pulled up alongside and offered me a lift. I wasn’t going to turn this down as it had been a long two days travelling here.
Bivvying on the beach and I was being bitten by mosquitoes through the fly net. So I devised an airframe using my Klymit air mattress to lift it off my face.
